Revolutionizing professional development

The University of Florida Lastinger Center is increasingly recognized as an emerging leader in the teacher quality movement. We work with educators and community leaders to create innovative, interconnected and interdependent initiatives that focus on developing great teachers.

Through our high-quality job-embedded professional development, we aim to transform teaching and learning. We intentionally and systematically focus on offering practical know-how that teachers can implement in their classrooms.

Our focus on application of new learning also helps teachers meet the cultural, linguistic and racial diversity in their classroom contexts. We work to make learning a part of the daily function of educators. Thus, schools become a place where teachers want to come (recruitment) and want to stay (retention) because they feel supported as professionals (teacher development).

We build and sustain this approach by marshalling the expertise of the University of Florida. We blend the latest research with effective practice to build award-winning learning systems and programs that boost teaching practice and advance student achievement.

In recent months, our professional development programs have won several prestigious awards: the US Department of Education’s 2011 Investing in Innovation (i3) award, the 2011 Florida Association for Staff Development’s award for the state’s top professional development program, and the Association of Teacher Educators’ 2011 award for the country’s top teacher education partnership program.
